Mustang Heroes was founded in 2010 by a group of incoming first-years at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. They dreamed of inspiring fellow students in service in hopes of making both SMU and Dallas a better place to grow, live and learn. By May 2012, Mustang Heroes organized and served with three different long-term community partners: Head Start, KIPP Charter School and the Family Getaway Shelter.
By August 2017, Mustang Heroes expanded to include over 15 projects and over 250 volunteer Heroes, serving over 3000+ hours over the academic year. The community partnerships grew to include renowned service organizations in the Dallas community such as Habitat for Humanity, Heart House and North Texas Food Bank.
The 2022-2023 academic year marks the beginning of our 12th year of service. We are proud to be working with even more community partners than ever before and offering a wide variety of projects that serve weekly, biweekly, and monthly in the Dallas community. For a full list of our service projects, please visit our Community Partners or Documents and Forms page.
As Southern Methodist University’s largest organization, we challenge students to broaden their outlook by providing service opportunities to both impact and learn from the greater Dallas community. By promoting servant-leadership, we strive to raise awareness, build our community, and grow ourselves and others.
